Endangered exhbition

An update:

Endangered exhibition applications- the date for preliminary round judging has been extended to try to accommodate the unforeseen circumstances we find ourselves in.

The Closing date- for digital submissions is now 30th June. See application form attached.

We have engaged two independent Judges- one from International Felters Association and one Non-member, established Irish felt maker.

The first round of judging will be done using digital submissions- see the application for details of format required. This will be done remotely, using an anonymous numbering system. The Judges will not know who has submitted any piece and their decision is final. The committee is not involved in this judging process. The entries will be ranked in numerical order, the top 20pieces will go on to the next round.

Currently we have been allocated a gallery space by Knit & Stitch- 6mx 5m x5m (wall space, with floor space available for some 3D pieces). We are in touch with the organisers- twisted thread. They have promised to keep us informed. Currently the K&S is going ahead in November. I am sure you can appreciate that we are nervous about this but remain hopeful also.

We have a plan B in place, should the knit & stitch show be cancelled. We have already been in contact with our OPW contact in the Phoenix Park. He has assured us that he will not see us stuck. We are hopeful therefore that we will be able to exhibit at one of the Phoenix Park venues- for example the visitor centre, the Cowshed or Farmleigh ( should the Knit & Stitch RDS be cancelled).

In these new and uncertain times, we are finding new ways of working. We have had to learn to be more flexible. Our two judges for example will be working remotely for the first round. We do however want to promote our craft of felt making. We want to offer our members something to aim for. We want to inspire and encourage fellow artists and we want to remain creative.

I read somewhere recently that while science will find us a cure, art will keep us sane… this resonated with me and I hope that you members understand that while some flexibility may be required on all our parts we will endeavour to remain optimistic and push forward with the “Endangered” exhibition… a title that seems even more important today than ever.

Entry open to members of Feltmakers Ireland 2020 only.

Purple Haze – theme for our stand at the Knitting & Stitching Show

The Dublin Knitting and Stitching show is nearly upon us, and we will, as ever, have a stand to promote our wonderful craft. We find people are very excited and inspired by the display of your work that we have each year, and we always try to be visually striking. So this year we want to really stand out from the crowd, and are asking for PURPLE pieces. In years gone by we have chosen a colour for a theme and it allows us to display the huge versatility of fine felt, while keeping a unified look. This is a great chance to show your work in a less formal way than a full exhibition. So go on, make us something purple. Purple jewellery, a purple hat, a purple bag, a perfect purple pansy picture! You can bring your piece to a Sunday Session or send it to either Maureen or Holly. We will be mounting the display on the Wednesday, November 11th, so will need your work before then. Go on, give it a go! But please understand that the space is limited, so keep that in mind.

Textile Exhibition Call Out

Thread Song

The DCCoI are holding the 6th annual textile exhibition for members at this year’s Knitting & Stitching Show in the RDS. The theme is the life and work of WB Yeats.

The DCCoI invited members to attend a day-long workshop on Monday 20th July. The morning session was presented by Medb Charleton, an introduction to The Life and Poetry of W.B Yeats and Yeats Poetry and the Fabric of History. The later part of the morning was taken up with a couple of short technical talks. The first was about framing, with some very valuable tips about framing your work for exhibition. This particular exhibition does not accept glass so that rules out any issues you might have with glass. We did look at the difference between regular glass and museum/archive glass, which contains a UV filter that will protect your work from light damage. The difference was amazing and the archive glass is certainly worth considering, despite the considerable price difference. The second technical session was about writing a successful application.  Assessors and curators will receive many applications and will have to read through them all, so it is very important that yours is clearly written, concise and relevant.

Advice on writing application: http://www.ccoienterprise.ie/ideas/article/tips-advice-writing-application-forms

The afternoon session was a collaborative workshop, facilitated by Caroline Schofield. Caroline gave us an inspirational whistle-stop tour of her work. We then broke up into small groups and worked together to produce a visual interpretation inspired by the morning’s exploration of Yeats. This was great fun and fascinating to see how others responded visually to the words in a poem.

Details for applicants: Pieces must be contemporary in design and can be in any textile media utilising slow and/or fast craft techniques, handcrafted or digital technologies.
Work can take the form of literal or abstract interpretation, functional and non-functional, wearable and non-wearable.
Work will be selected based on excellence in design and making, its fit within the overall exhibition and creative interpretation of the brief.
Work must have been made within the last three years and not previously shown in The Knitting & Stitching Show or in any DCCoI exhibitions.

Successful applicants will have their work photographed and exhibited in The Knitting & Stitching Show. This exhibition may also travel to other venues both in Ireland and the UK.

The deadline for submissions is 22 September 2015. It would be fantastic to see lots of felt represented in the exhibition
