Felt Against Poverty

The idea of the project is to promote awareness of the 17th October as the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Fáilte Isteach Monaghan is a group of volunteers providing free conversational English classes for migrants refugees and asylum seekers in collaboration with Monaghan Integrated Development is the Local Development Company for county Monaghan.

Our group with support of “Green Felt” by Larissa Kleshnina will discover different felting techniques and each participant will learn how to make felted garments (scarf, hat, waistcoat and brooch). The remnants will be used to make a wall-hanging. As the result of the course participants will not only know the main felting techniques and materials, they will be able to produce hand felted things and will have an understanding of each other’s life experiences. All the participants do not have previous experience in felting. The project is already running from the 12th of September in Monaghan.

There are many Felting cooperatives around the world (Mongolia, Peru, Kazakhstan, Kirgizstan, Nepal , Afghanistan, Iraq , Syria , Turkey etc) People in these countries are trying to overcome poverty with this ancient yet easy to make type of applied art.

So this is the way to learn from each other, be united, gain knowledge, make friends, be in good mood, and improve self-esteem.

The conclusion of our project will be in a fashion show where participants will become models to demonstrate their masterpieces and highlight ways of tackling poverty around the world.

At the Fashion Show event we will run a presentation to promote Fair Trade and Felting Cooperatives around the world to explain how fair trade helps to tackle poverty.

We want to demonstrate our unity and support with felting cooperatives around the world who are trying to overcome poverty with their work and express solidarity with the fight to eradicate poverty globally and motivate local people to follow their example.

All welcome to visit and support our Felt Fashion Show on the 17th of October at 7.30 p.m. YWCA North Road, Monaghan.
