Events: Festival of Wool and Cloth – July in Waterville, Co Kerry

Over four days, the Festival of Wool and Cloth will offer workshops and talks on knitting, weaving, spinning, wet felting, needle felting, eco printing, craftivism, and more.

Feltmakers Ireland Guild member Sharon Wells is teaching a taster needlefelting workshop on Friday, the 5th July. Sharon will be working from photographs by local photographer Alice Dennehy.

Events: Wet Felting for Children – Wise Wool Project – K-FEST in Killorglin this Weekend

Event: Wildflowers and Wool in Wicklow

Foraging and Natural Dye workshop, Saturday June 22nd, in association with Made in Wicklow and supported by Wicklow Craft Foundation.

Join Wildflowers and Wool in Wicklow Workshop in Blessington, overlooking the lakes, for an immersive day. Meet the alpaca, pigs, and sheep that reside nearby. Forage in Miriam Brady’s garden for medicinal and dye plants. Make your own natural teas and sample an organic, natural lunch. In the afternoon, Feltmakers Ireland member Sharon Wells, will share about the heritage of wool in Ireland and how to use natural dyes.

News: Wool in Ireland Updates

Irish wool has been the subject of two news articles in recent weeks.

The Dáil recently deliberated on the potential of Ireland’s wool industry, recognizing the need to explore new markets for the product. Pippa Hackett, Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM), said: “In one sense, the world is our oyster when it comes to wool”.

Ten months following its establishment, the Irish Grown Wool Council convened its inaugural Annual General Meeting at the Athlone Springs Hotel on Friday, February 16th, 2024.

Feltuary2024 is a social media idea created by the Northeast Feltmakers Guild (NEFG). Wet felters and needlefelters can share examples of their work on a different topic or theme each day. You can share on Instagram or Facebook, daily or occasionally. It’s all up to you!

The theme for the 7th of February is ‘A Favorite Fiber Book’.

What is your favourite fibre book?

Naturally, Feltmakers Ireland has a favourite book – ‘Exploring Irish Wool for Feltmaking‘, a much-needed book on the subject of felting with Irish-raised wool.

The book includes an introduction by Minister Pippa Hackett, who is herself a sheep farmer. There are chapters on scouring, dyeing, and felting with local wools. Volunteers within our guild sampled fibre from over 40 species of sheep under the guidance of guild member Annika Berglund.

At Showcase 2024 in January, the Irish Grown Wool Council (IGWC) presented a series of three panels about the past, present, and future of Irish wool. Presented by Rebecca Marsden

Day One

The first panel covered ‘Wool Chronicles: Heritage & Horizon’ and included –

Speaker Ngaire Takano is investigating alternative methods of scouring wool.
A second slide shows an improved flow for scouring.
Dr Tim Yeomans (in the blue shirt) shared about technical advances that could be applied to wool.

Lastly, as part of the annual Showcase awards, the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland awarded the knitwear company Ériu, which focuses on using sustainable and circular Irish-raised wool, as the ‘Overall Winner’.

Exhibition: Four St Brigid’s Cloaks – Kildare

Open viewing of four St Brigid’s Cloaks unveiled in St Brigid’s Cathedral, in conjunction with the Brigid 1500 celebrations across the county.

St Brigid’s Cloaks is a community artwork developed by Wool in School, in association with Creative Ireland and Kildare County Council. These four stunning St Brigid’s Cloaks were crafted with an all-encompassing approach to wool heritage and art.

This project, managed by Director Lorna McCormack and lead Artist Michelle Hickey Legge, focused on using locally sourced Irish-grown wool and sustainable resources aligning with the ethos of Wool in School and several of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030.

This contemporary manifestation of St Brigid’s cloak highlights the value of knitting as a creative past-time which is beneficial for the health and well-being of everyone living in Ireland’s community and will create a beautiful backdrop to the celebrations and commemoration of the legacy of St Brigid at St Brigid’s Cathedral in Kildare Town in 2024.
