Of Interest: Rialto Community Arts Festival – Co Dublin – This Week

The third annual Rialto Community Arts Festival in Co Dublin is this week. The festival includes poetry, music, drama, talks, exhibitions and craft workshops.

Of particular interest:

  • A talk about Linen in the Liberties on Thursday morning.
  • Crochet and screen printing workshops at F2 Centre

Note: Some of the activities need to be booked.

When: Thursday, the 18th, through Sunday, the 21st of June

Where: At various locations in D08, Dublin, including the F2 Centre and the St Andrew’s Community Centre

Of Interest: Pop-Up Textile Museum and Walking Tour – Both part of Culture Date with Dublin 8

Pop-Up Textile Museum

The Liberties Weavers’ Pop-Up Textile Museum will bring the rich and often overlooked textile heritage of Dublin 8 to life through a vibrant, community-led exhibition. Drawing on materials and stories from Botany Mill, Henry White’s, Glen Abbey and many more, the museum will showcase historic artefacts, archival documents, photographs, and contemporary responses that trace the area’s deep connection to weaving, clothing production, and industry.

WHERE: Deanery Mews, St Patrick’s Close, Dublin 8

WHEN:

  • Opening on Thursday, the 7th May. Doors open at 1 PM, and the official opening is at 2 PM.
  • Thursday, the 7th of May, from 1-8 PM
  • Friday, the 8th of May, from 12-7 PM
  • Saturday, the 9th of May, from 10 AM-5 PM

Walk, Weave, & Whiskey Experience

History under your feet, stories in every street. Join Liz Gillis for a guided walk through The Liberties, then wind down with weaving stories, and a whiskey tasting at Teeling Whiskey Distillery.

Entry to the Pop-up Textile Museum is free, but the walk on Wednesday the 6th at 4:30 PM is not and needs to be booked.

Exhibition: Dressing Dublin – Made in Blackrock – Irish Textile History

The exhibition ‘Dressing Dublin: Made in Blackrock‘ explores the former local textile industry, the people who worked in it and how it was influenced by national and international economic forces. The project showcases the small area around Brookfield Terrace and Carysfort Avenue in Blackrock, County Dublin, which produced, until the 1980s, locally made textiles, hosiery, shirts, workwear, and much more.

The exhibition runs through Monday, the 9th of March.

There is a 30-minute film, an audio tour and an extended interview hosted by fashion historian, Laura Fitzachary.

The 22-minute film has interviews with former employees, Liam Dodd and Christine Fitzachary, which captures this history before this part of our local heritage disappears. Through these conversations, we can also review the current state of the clothing industry in Ireland today.
