Part 2

Bursary Draw

In 2023, Feltmakers Ireland had a Bursary Draw open to all paid-up members. The winner uses the award to attend an in-person or an online feltmaking class. Last year, Ramona Farrelly won; you can read about the online Pam de Groot class she attended here – https://feltmakersireland.com/2023/09/06/news-ramona-farrelly-enjoys-pam-de-groots-course/

During the AGM, Doris Reinisch’s name was pulled from the hat. However, a committee member recalled that she had won the Bursary Award in 2021. You can read about the Molly Williams class that Doris took here – https://feltmakersireland.com/2022/02/09/contemporary-dancer-felt-workshop-attended-by-doris-reinisch-winner-of-feltmakers-irelands-bursary-2021-report-by-doris-reinisch/

Doris graciously permitted us to randomly select another individual to receive this additional benefit of guild membership. Adrienne Dempsey is the lucky winner!

Cannot wait to see what class Adrienne takes with her award!

Fibre Swap

All members were asked to bring a 50-gram, opaque bag of fibre/fabric/embellishments, which would then be ‘swapped’ by passing to the person to the right.

Member Sam Fagan received a cool mix of Bershaf batts and woven ribbons.

Member Exhibition

Each member was asked to bring a piece of felted artwork to display as part of the AGM. This informal exhibition filled a table and beyond!

Pardon if the photos are slightly ‘off-colour’; the combination of natural light from the windows and indoor electric lights makes everything look ‘buttery’.

Conclusion

A huge thank you to all the members who contributed to the success of Feltmakers Ireland’s 2024 AGM! Your active involvement and support were instrumental in making it a great event.

Here’s to another year of collaboration and creativity!

Education: Hanging Felted Spiral Online Class with Hélène Dooley

The Felting and Fiber Studio is again offering Hélène Dooley’s ‘Felted Hanging Spiral‘ course, which starts Friday, the 12th of April. Adding movement to an art piece takes it to a new dimension. The shape becomes fluid, even mesmerising.

This is a four-week online course, and you don’t have to be present at any particular time. You can access videos and Hélène’s support throughout the course and download the PDFs for future reference.

Classes are purposely small and intimate so that you can get to know your fellow participants and build networks both at home and abroad.

Note: Hélène is a long-standing member of Feltmakers Ireland.

Contact Helene at feltzentextiles@gmail.com if you would like to find out more.

News: Four Felters at Showcase

Four felters exhibited their work at Showcase Ireland 2024. This may not seem like a lot, but in 2023, only two designers/artisans exhibited work using the medium of feltmaking. So, there was twice as much this year!

Each of the artists from Showcase 2024 has her own unique way of working with the medium of felted wool. Two create wearable art, while the other two create art for the home.

Here they are, in A-Z order.

Alexa Designs

County Wicklow resident Alexa Zolich of Alexa Design creates luxurious Nunofelted wraps. Originally from Poland, she studied Textiles at the National College of Art and Design. You can view some of her work in person at Marion Cuddy at Powerscourt Centre, Dublin.

To see more of Alexa’s work, visit her website – https://www.alexadesign.ie/

Cushla Of Gullion

Dundalk-based Feltmakers Ireland member Caóilfíonn Murphy O’Hanlon of Cushla of Gullion creates landscape paintings inspired by the Irish countryside. Instead of using paint, she uses wool and other textiles. Farmer’s Journal recently did a Meet the Maker profile on Caóilfíonn - https://www.farmersjournal.ie/life/craft/meet-the-maker-caoilfionn-murphy-o-hanlon-803961

My nana taught me to knit and to crochet, but discovering the versatility of felting was a revelation to me as artistic expression. I found it soon became my therapeutic, go to textile medium instantly connecting me to the landscape at my door and allowing me to translate the textures, form and sense of place in my work drawing on past bonds and imbuing memories into each piece.

Caóilfíonn Murphy O’Hanlon

To see more of Caóilfíonn’s work, visit her website – https://cushlaofgullion.com/

Jayne Gillan Designs

County Kerry resident Jayne Gillan of Jane Gillan Designs creates felted scarves inspired by the colours and textures of the Irish landscape.

To see more of Jayne’s work, visit her website – https://www.jaynegillan.com/

Karena Ryan Textile Art

Guild member Karena Ryan of Karena Ryan Textile Art is based in County Galway. She combines hand-felted wool with stitch and works with Irish linens, tweeds and vintage Foxford blankets. Her felted lamp made from Irish-raised Galway wool was shortlisted for an award in the Home Category of Showcase 2024.

There is a lovely article about Karena in the Agriland Journalhttps://www.agriland.ie/farming-news/lamp-made-from-galway-wool-to-feature-at-showcase-2024/

To see more of Karena’s work, visit her website – https://karenaryanartist.com/

Editor’s Note: Apologies if we missed any other Showcase 2024 designers who create felted products.
