On Sunday, the 23rd of November, the recently launched Feltmakers Ireland WEST came together in Gort, County Galway, to create Wet-felted Bells. Led by member Sandra Marschall, we had a great time.
Currently, we have 17 members who live in County Galway! If you are interested in joining (or renewing) before the end of the year, Feltmakers Ireland will happily roll over your membership to 2026.
Note: Feltmakers Ireland WEST will not meet up in December, as many of us are busy with Christmas craft fairs. However, we plan to create felted flowers at our January Session. Date to be announced.

On a crisp November morning, thirty enthusiastic members of Feltmakers Ireland gathered at the CIE Sports Hall in Inchicore for a truly enchanting workshop led by the talented Belinda Reid of Chasing Dreams Felt Art. Held on Sunday, the 9th of November, the session focused on crafting whimsical three-dimensional fairies and angels using the delightful art of needle felting—a meditative, sculptural technique that transforms loose wool fibres into firm, detailed shapes with the repeated poking of a barbed needle.
Belinda, a passionate felt artist and Feltmakers Ireland committee member, guided the group with warmth and expertise. Known for her intricate felted creations and patient teaching style, she ensured every participant felt supported, offering one-on-one advice tailored to individual projects.
The process began with the basics: shaping a solid head from soft carded Irish wool. Arms came next—pipe cleaners wrapped first in skin-toned, Merino Roving in ‘Dune’ from Belinda’s Shop, for structure, then layered with colourful wool to form the gowns. Bodies and dresses bloomed in a rainbow of hues, from soft pastels to vibrant jewel tones. Hairstyles added personality: flowing blonde or brunette locks, elegant buns, or playful curls. Finally, delicate wings completed each figure, turning simple materials into magical beings.

Optional embroidery thread allowed for extra sparkle: tiny stitched details on dresses, belts, or even miniature flowers. The room buzzed with quiet concentration and bursts of delight as fairies, angels, one witch and a Granuaile O’Malley Pirate Queen emerged, each one utterly unique.

Participants left beaming, many already planning their next creations. “I can’t wait to make a whole flock for Christmas gifts!” one member shared. Others envisioned their new treasures perched on mantels or twinkling among fairy lights as part of seasonal décor.
A huge thank you to Belinda Reid for sharing her skill and infectious creativity, and to the dedicated volunteers who made the day run smoothly. Workshops like these remind us why we love felting: a few handfuls of wool, a little patience, and suddenly—magic!

We will make a wet-felted Holiday Star for window decoration – perfect for Christmas or year-round!
There will be a choice of three finished models using wool yarn, Merino wool, and, for one version, Wensleydale locks.
What to bring:
One large and one small towel
Sewing pins
Small sharp scissors
Bubble wrap – approximately sized at 25 by 50cm
Soap and water bowl
Ball brause or sprinkler
A plastic bag
All other materials will be provided.
Additional Information
A Sunday Session like this will require lots of tea/ coffee/cake and chat, so there’ll be an abundance of that. Of course, homebakes are always welcome! Please bring a ‘keep cup’ or mug from home if possible. That will lessen the amount of paper cups thrown away.
There is the usual 5 euro fee.
Note: Since this is the season of colds and coughs, let’s not share them. However, we welcome you to join via Zoom Link, which we email to all members on Friday afternoon.

Annika Berglund, a graduate of NCAD, has shown work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and abroad and has won several awards, including the Crafts Council’s price for Best Craft in the Garden 2008 and the NUI Art and Design Prize 2010.
Moving from ceramics, glass, and bronze to felt in 2020, one of her earliest felt pieces depicting the COVID-19 virus was acquired by the National Museum of Ireland. Having had one solo show and many group shows featuring Felt, Annika was a primary contributor to Feltmakers Ireland’s research project around Irish wool and the resulting book,Exploring Irish Wool for Feltmaking. She is currently Treasurer of Feltmakers Ireland.
Annika’s upcoming solo exhibition, Tapestry, opens on Sunday, the 17th of November at 15:00 in the Olivier Cornet Gallery (after the Sunday session). She welcomes you all to attend. The show runs until the 15th of December.

On Sunday, the 12th of November, committee member Deirdre Crofts led guild members in creating wet felted Elf Booties. Under her excellent tutelage, we enjoyed seeing how quickly these tiny Christmas decorations came together. And she had thought of everything – even bringing in tiny jingle bells and ribbons for us to sew onto our boots!

Tools
There were several questions about a couple of helpful wet felting tools.
The above tool is called a ball brause, which is a sprinkler for moistening wool fibre. It can be found at DHG, Wolknoll or sometimes at garden supply shops, as it is used for watering bonsai plants.
Similarly, there were questions about the above sprinkler tops, which the guild purchased for workshops. You can find similar ones HERE. Note: they do not fit all bottles.
Also, one can always go down the DIY route and pierce holes into the lid of a plastic water bottle or use a plant mister.

Lastly, as always, there was a yummy spread of home bakes. A shout out to Neasa Ryan for bringing her beautiful Pavlova and to Lorna Cady for her‘Great British Bake Off’ inspired Custard Cream Biscuits!
Our November Sunday Session will start earlier due to circumstances beyond our control – 10 AM.
Guild member Deirdre Crofts will show us how to make these cute elf booties. So, you have the rest of the month to make multiples of them for family and friends before the 🎄trees go up!
The guild will provide the wool roving and various sparkly bits. All you need to bring is your felting kit = a towel, bubble wrap, your chosen soap, and a basis for water.
When: Due to circumstances beyond our control, we must start a half hour earlier than usual and finish up earlier – 10 AM until 11:30. Additionally, we will enjoy our coffee break on the go – while felting.
Also, please bring a home-baked treat to share. There is the usual member contribution of 5 euros to cover the coffee/tea/hall rental.
Members who cannot attend in person can use the Zoom link that will be emailed out on Friday or Saturday. If the tech elves cooperate, the session will be recorded and will later be uploaded to our YouTube Channel.
Due to circumstances beyond our control (involving a new manager and a double booking), we have to start our November Sunday Session half an hour earlier this weekend.
It will now start promptly at 10 AM and will have to end at 11:30 AM.
Please arrive a little early so we can promptly start our session with Deirdre Crofts at 10 AM. She is teaching us how to felt Elf Booties, which will make charming Christmas decorations.
Lastly, we will have our ‘coffee break’ without a break…. On the go, so to speak….😊

December Session
On the 10th of December, guild member Sharon Wells will work with us to needlefelt a beautiful winter scene. There will be a charge of €10 for all the materials for this session. More details for later. But it could be another Christmas present ticked off the list!
