Exhibition: Cork Textiles Network Show in Bishopstown Library – Co Cork

The Cork Textiles Network‘s (CTN) spring exhibition theme is Aistear, the Irish word for a journey of experience. The exhibition includes a wide and varied selection of textile and fabric disciplines from appliqué, felting, weaving, embroidery, batik, and mixed media.

Several of Feltmakers Ireland members belong to the CTN and have artwork in the exhibition, including Maggie McCartney (whose work is on the poster), Cara Shank, Karima Rebecca Powell, and Emily Thompson.

The show also showcases a large collaborative project that CTN members undertook last year: a large wall hanging featuring the work of 36 artists who responded to a specific brief to create a piece of art that resonates with imagination, creativity and skill.

When: The show runs through Tuesday, the 29th of April.

Open Call: “Listen to the Land Speak” – West Cork Creates Exhibition – Cnoc Buí Community Arts Centre

The West Cork Creates (WCC) committee’s 16th Visual Arts Exhibition, “Listen to the Land Speak”, will run from 1st to 16th of August 2026.

The “Listen to the Land Speak” exhibition will be a tribute to the work and ideas of the late Manchán Magan, who honoured us with a knowledgeable and heartfelt opening speech for the 2018 WCC exhibition.

Listen to the Land Speak is a book (and RTE documentary) about “exploring Ireland’s deep connection to its natural landscape, uncovering ancient myths, ancestral wisdom, and ecological lessons embedded in its bogs, rivers and trees, revealing how these elements shaped Irish identity and offer profound insights for today. It’s a journey to understand the life-sustaining wisdom beneath our feet and reconnect with nature’s rhythms, tracing the footsteps of our ancestors who lived in deep harmony with the land.”

Details

Craftspeople, fine artists and designers are invited to respond to the theme and produce innovative work (individual or collaborative) for the WCC exhibition.

Approximately 45 participants will be selected from the applications received.

Education: Heritage Sheep Farming and the Business of Irish Wool – with Blátnaid Gallagher and Jean Long – Ballymaloe Cookery School – Co Cork

The Ballymaloe Cookery School has a one-day, in-person course on Heritage Sheep Farming and the Business of Irish Wool.

From the website – “The majority of Irish sweaters are not made with Irish wool, they are just knitted in Ireland- a fact which many people are unaware of. The reason for this is more complex than you may expect; both Blátnaid Gallagher, Founder of the Galway Wool Coop, and Jean Long, Master Hand Knitter, have made it their business to understand why and advocate for a change.

This 1-day course will unpack this issue and invite you to learn from and respect what farmers like Blatnaid and craftspeople like Jean are doing in the restoration of heritage breeds like Galway Sheep and in creating demand within the business of Irish Wool.”

In addition, there will be the following:

  • Tour of the organic farm, gardens and greenhouses
  • Hands-on learning through working with Irish Wool and learning the forgotten skill of hand knitting

From Róisín de Buitléar’s Instagram @CEIRD_ The Irish word for craft is Crinniú na Ceirde – Gathering craft. These are words used to tie our cultural identity to our craft, as seen at an event at the RDS earlier in the year, when over 200 craftspeople gathered for Crinniú na Ceirde to begin unravelling an Identity for Irish Craft.

It highlights that craftspeople form a vibrant community, creating a unique micro-industry comprised of skilled and passionate individuals who are eager to connect. We make significant contributions to education and tourism, and are an integral part of Ireland’s cultural identity. Yet, many traditional crafts practised today are not financially viable and therefore fall outside the scope of government enterprise-based craft schemes, leaving them without adequate support. This lack of recognition poses a threat to their sustainability, with many crafts at risk of disappearing altogether. Despite this, their cultural and social contributions to the economy are substantial—though currently unmeasured and undervalued.

On Sunday, August 31st, the group will hold a follow-up session at Kilcoe Studios, Main Street, Ballydehob, Co. Cork, P81 A218, from 12:00 to 4:00 PM.

Join Fibreshed Ireland in West Cork this August Craft Month 2025 for a hands-on, drop-in workshop exploring the ancient craft of transforming flax into linen!

Discover the fascinating journey of this humble plant—from seed to fabric—and the traditional tools and techniques used along the way: rippling, scutching, hackling, spinning and weaving.

Join Kathy Kirwan, who has spent years studying and reviving traditional flax-processing methods, for a hands-on workshop. You’ll see the stages of flax processing and learn about flax’s role in regenerative farming, crop rotation, and its many uses—from sustainable textiles to ropes, composites, and more.

Sonia from Kilcoe Studios will be making paper and rope from flax and organising games and activities with children outside, inspired by traditional games. All ages are welcome to share their memories of games they played.

  • Flax to Linen demonstrations – all day
  • Paper making and rope making – 12:00 – 3 PM
  • Heritage Games for children outdoors – 3 – 6 PM
