Sunday Session Nov 10th

nov 19 session

NEWS UPDATE:

Sunday session on Nov 10th will be held as usual at Knockmarron Gate Studio 10:30am, all welcome to attend. Clodagh will give a talk on Japanese textiles and show some of her own dye work. She is asking members to bring along any examples of their own Japanese textiles. Perhaps you have travelled there for the Rugby or plan to go next year for the Olympics? Japan is on trend in fashion too for 2020.

Please bring any examples you have of Kimonos, Shibori ( your own felt examples or otherwise) to contribute to the discussion and make the session lively.

KNIT AND STITCH

Thanks to all volunteers in advance of the show- without your help Feltmakers Ireland would not be able to have an exhibition stand. The Sunday session is running as usual despite it being the last day of the Knit and Stitch show… maybe we can share information about our visits and experience.

FIBRE will also be available- though there may be limited stock this weekend due to the Knit and Stitch show exhibit.

The 1916 Felt Experience

We had a wonderful day in Merrion Square in Dublin today taking part in RTÉ ‘Reflecting The Rising’ craft village. We met lots of people who helped us felt our 1916 – 2016 banner – thanks to all the women, men and children who rolled up their sleeves and made the banner with us. As soon as the banner is dry we will post a photograph here.

We have been researching how wool was felted or ‘fulled’ one hundred years ago in Ireland. One of our committee members, Clodagh Mac Donagh told us a story  from her late father from Connemara:

There wasn’t felting as we know it,  but there was fulling.   As a child, my father recalled that  the family would receive their homespun fabric from the local weaver, and it would be soaked in  urine   in a tin bath in the outhouse,  and two men would then sit on chairs  opposite each other and would kick the fabric to each other, the fabric, all the while was being shrunk (felted) rendering it windproof, waterproof, and much warmer and tougher.

The Irish (Gaelic) word for urine is called fual, so  my theory is  that this is where the Americans get the term fulling.

In Newfoundland  (where lots of Irish emigrated) there was a very strong culture of treating  woven cloth by beating it (roughly the same idea) and they used to sing fabulous songs (to the rhythm of  the  beating) called waulking songs in the background of any  felting type activity.
Here is a video from Scotland with a group of women fulling together and singing a waulking song:

Thanks to Norma O’Connor and the crew from RTÉ for their warm welcome and for arranging the sunshine!

Shibori Workshop – Ancient techniques, Contemporary designs in Felt making

We will experiment with a range of ‘shibori’ techniques that can be applied to felt to create striking three-dimensional effects in your felted fabric. The main focus is on experimentation and discovery.

Inspired by beauty in simple form, Nessa’s style brings together her love and fascination of the natural world and felt making in sculptural form.

Nessa has been exploring and teaching shibori and nuno felting techniques in her more recent works and is particularly interested in the contemporary approach of binding metal pieces with delicate fibres such as silk and lace with wool.

This workshop is suitable for beginner to advanced felt-makers of all levels
