Of Interest: EU CAP Network Focus Group – European Wool Report and 6 Mini Papers

Via European Wool Exchange (EWE) Foundation’s Instagram:

“The final report of the EU CAP Network Focus Group, ‘Innovative and sustainable ways to strengthen the role of farmers in revitalising the European wool value chain ‘, is out.

Five strategic priorities run through the report: investment in infrastructure, stronger skills and training, a clearer identity for European wool through traceability and communication, support for innovation in both traditional and new applications, and stronger networking across Europe. Taken together, the findings show that European wool is still underused and undervalued, yet offers significant untapped opportunities for rural development, the circular bioeconomy, and resilient farming systems. Coordinated action is now needed to realise this potential in the future.”

There are also six so-called ‘Mini Papers’ (MP) to complement the report:

  • MP 1: A better market for European wool through certifications, traceability, and marketing tools
  • MP 2: Wool as an animal by-product: challenges and opportunities
  • MP 3: Wool improvement initiative: Collection, cooperation, and education
  • MP 4: European wool industry: history, current context, and future foundations
  • MP 5: Innovative uses of wool to support sheep farmers in the EU
  • MP 6: State of the art of the wool value chain in Europe

Event: The 5th Annual European Wool Day – Member Sharon Wells is Presenting in Rome

The 5th European Wool Day will be celebrated on Sunday, the 6th of April, from 10 AM to 5 PM CEST at I Casali del Pino in Rome, Italy. The event will also be live-streamed on EWE’s YouTube channel – https://www.youtube.com/@ewefoundation-europeanwool255

The event will feature presentations, demonstrations, and interactive workshops led by wool enthusiasts from across Europe. Attendees of all ages can explore various wool-related activities, including washing, dyeing, spinning, felting, crochet, weaving, and even painting with wool, while learning about best practices and creative techniques.

Feltmakers Ireland member Sharon Wells will be in Rome to present her experiences of recovering from trauma in her talk ‘Healing through Wool,’ at 11 AM. Additionally, she will facilitate a European landscape textile workshop to be created by representatives of EWE member countries.

Open Call: European Wool Day 2025 – 6th of April -Rome, Italy

European Wool Day is an event dedicated to celebrating wool’s versatile and sustainable benefits, a natural fibre with a rich heritage and an important role in our future. The event has a particular focus on wool’s therapeutic and health-related uses.​​​

​Applications are now open for wool producers, health professionals, and sustainability advocates to share their woollen stories contributing to our health and the planet’s health at the 5th European Wool Day.

There are three ways to participate:

-Presenting in person on 6th April from Rome, Italy
-Presenting live joining online on 6th April
-Contributing with a pre-recorded presentation.

The deadline for applications is the 16th of February, 2025.
