Of Interest: European Crafts Alliance Annual Conference – Crafting Wellbeing – Online and In-person

The European Crafts Alliance (ECA) is holding its annual conference on Thursday, the 30th of April. In addition to being an in-person event in Florence, Italy, access to the conference is also available online.

Across Europe, craft is expanding beyond the workshop and into public health and community care. Co-organised by Artex and presented in collaboration with Firenze Fiera, during the 90th anniversary of the MIDA International Handicraft Exhibition in Florence, Italy, this year, the conference will explore how making actually works in clinical rehabilitation, mental health, and social inclusion. For the craft sector, these aren’t just social goals; they represent new professional pathways and a way to connect the workshop with the public health sector.

A central highlight of the programme is the premiere of the ECA’s foundational study on Crafting Health and Wellbeing. Alongside this vital data, attendees will hear from practitioners who are successfully integrating traditional crafts into professional recovery programmes, creating new pathways for makers.

Participation is free and open to the public.

How will crafts shape the future of Europe’s economy? The European Crafts Alliance Annual Conference 2025: ‘Positioning Crafts in the Contemporary Economy’ will explore this question.

This hybrid conference, co-hosted by @eca.crafts & @norwegiancrafts, will explore the fundamental economic challenges and opportunities for craftspeople, offer practical strategies for collaboration from the Nordic Network, present new perspectives on the social and cultural value of craft, and examine how craftspeople are integrating technology with traditional skills to create innovative and economically viable work.

The event will be livestreamed on the ECA YouTube Channel, with the broadcast starting at 9.30 CET. They recommend joining the stream a few minutes early. Online attendees are invited to participate actively in polls and the live Q&A session using the interactive tools provided.

The inaugural European Craft Alliance (ECA) Summer School will offer a relaxed, self-paced online programme exploring the intersection of entrepreneurship, sustainability, and creativity in the craft sector.

Curated content clusters, featuring highlights from the ECA and its members, will be published over four themed weeks. Each week will also include ‘Beach Reading Mosaic,’ a curated collection of thought-provoking essays on European crafts.

When: 21st of July to 16th of August 2025.

The programme is free and open to all.

Open Call: Creative Exchange Residency – European Crafts Alliance

The Creative Exchange Residency for Craft Practitioners aims to foster a collaborative and open learning environment, encouraging craft practitioners to apply their unique skills and perspectives. Successful applicants can engage in meaningful exchanges, contributing to the rich tapestry of European craft knowledge and practice.

The call is open to professional craft practitioners of all levels from diverse regions across Europe. It facilitates exchanges both between countries and within different regions of the same country, encouraging a wide variety of knowledge-sharing experiences.

Apply in one of the three categories:

Pair Exchange – traditional two-week knowledge exchange, option for a hybrid format with 7 days in person and the rest online, established pairs or find a partner.

Craft Practitioners – attending established workshops of at least 7 days, eligible for a stipend for the workshop duration, propose a supplementary program for the remaining days.

Group Exchange (3-20 participants): Craft practitioners form a group for a collective exchange. There is an option for a hybrid format with 7 days in person and the rest online. Each member of the group is individually eligible for the stipend.

Successful applicants will receive a stipend of 400€.

The roll-out call spans until the 31st of March 2025, and the residency can take place until the 15th of April, 2025, providing an extended application window and more opportunities for craft practitioners.
