Recap: Pine Needle Felting Technique with Leiko Uchiyama

For Feltmakers Ireland’s Sunday Session in January, we enjoyed learning how to create the Pine Needle Felting Technique with guild member and artist Leiko Uchiyama. Our session was only two hours long, so each student concentrated on making a sample square.

A Full House

It was a popular session, as seen in the photos. Leiko, who teaches all over the world, is based in Carlow, Ireland, and we are incredibly fortunate that she was willing to share her expertise with us.

Beautiful Fibre

Leiko brought a gorgeous array of fibres for us to purchase – so many colours! The 50% Silk/Wool bundles glittered and drew us in.

Leiko’s Art Work

Leiko brought samples and garments created with her iconic Pine Needle Felting Technique. As she makes both wearable and fine art felt using wool, she also brought thicker, sculptural felted works for members to see all the possibilities of wet feltmaking.

Hands-On Learning

An experienced tutor, Leiko, chose to demonstrate to small groups of students so members could more easily see what she was doing. She explained all the steps so clearly.

Finished Samples

All of the students completed their Pine Needle Sample within the allotted time. Displayed above is a selection of the samples created—some vibrant and multi-coloured, others quietly monochromatic. Judging by the smiles, it’s clear we had a fantastic time!

One of the students, Deirdre Crofts, went home and started making a series of table mats – only seven more to go!

Conclusion

This Sunday Session was a fantastic way to kick off our felting year. A heartfelt thank you to Leiko Uchiyama for sharing her inspiring craft with us.

The CIE Sports Hall buzzed with activity as we welcomed 27 hands-on students and more than a dozen observers. Some of our members travelled significant distances to join us, and it was nice to finally meet them in person.

Special thanks also go to the members who generously shared their delicious home bakes with the group. The Pavlova was a standout hit, and the cleverly renamed “Brexit Biscuits” (formerly known as ‘Empire Biscuits’) brought plenty of smiles. Apologies for not having a photo of the refreshment table.

A warm and sincere thank you to everyone who contributed to making the day successful.

Sunday Session: Observers’ Spots for Leiko’s Pine Needle Technique – This Sunday

For our upcoming Sunday Session on the 12th of January, there are a few spaces for observers of Leiko Uchiyama‘s Pine Needle Technique. The hands-on workshop is fully booked up.

Class Description

We will make a small sample of the ‘Pine Needle Technique’, Leiko’s iconic wet felting technique used to create lacy felt.

Leiko will bring her beautiful hand-dyed mix of 50% 17.5 micron Merino and 50% silk, which she usually uses for this technique. It is €7/25g, and two to three people can share one bundle. This could be a good opportunity to try this material. Normal merino can also be used.

She will also bring some other types of hand-dyed fibre (21, 18, and 16 micron of Merino and Corriedale) for those interested in purchasing.

About Leiko

Leiko Uchiyama is a felt-making artist based in the rural county of Carlow, Ireland. She has lived and worked in France, New Zealand, and Indonesia, as well as her native Hokkaido, the north island of Japan. She has exhibited and given workshops in many different countries.

Leiko initially studied Animal Science and developed an interest in sheep before studying textiles.

Her work ranges from functional pieces, such as tableware and rugs, to wearable items like tunics, scarves and wraps, to more esoteric felt work that inhabits the growing space between craft and fine art. She believes the origin of craft lies in creating something for someone special, not only to serve a function but to make our lives more colourful and rich.

Recap: Felted Eyeglass Case Workshop with Judit Pocs – Hybrid Class in October

Hybrid Workshop with International Tutor

On October 6, 2024, eighteen members of Feltmakers Ireland came together at the CIE Sports Hall in Inchicore, Dublin, for an innovative hybrid workshop. Taught remotely by renowned Hungarian artist and tutor Judit Pócs via Zoom, this innovative course blended the advantages of group learning with international expertise. The project, a wet-felted eyeglass case with intricate embellishment options, challenged participants to develop their advanced felting skills.

For the workshop, students could use deliciously coloured Merino wool kits from Feltmakers Ireland and Design and Crafts Council (DCCI) member Leiko Uchiyama (https://www.leikofelt.com/shop/) or fibre from their own stashes.

  • As the projects were small, we shared tables.
  • Everyone could see the projector where the Zoom was cast.
  • Some students opted to wear gloves.
  • Fulling a section of the project.

We organised the CIE Sports Hall’s tables in three rows, with a ‘U’- shape of tables surrounding it. We wanted to ensure all the students could see the projector screen AND be able to get up and walk around the room.

With the class structured as a hybrid—our teacher, Judit, in Hungary, and the students gathered together in Dublin, Ireland—we had to adapt creatively. If we had been taking the class individually, each of us would have worked in front of our own computers and shared our work directly. With our hybrid session, we interacted differently since we used only one laptop to communicate with our teacher. Consequently, we took turns lining up to share our progress with Judit. Special thanks to committee member (and fellow student) Suzanne Phelan for her excellent expertise in using Zoom and for kindly loaning us her hardware – her laptop, projector, and screen. THANK YOU!!!

Each student used creative decision-making to ornament the outside of her case, and each one came out uniquely!

Conclusion

Our class with Judit Pocs was a rewarding experience. Students enjoyed the process and significantly advanced their feltmaking skills. Completing intricate eyeglass cases showcased their ability to master advanced techniques such as shaping three-dimensional felt, attaching gradient cords, using prefelt for patterning, and devising sturdy closures.

We can’t wait to see how they bring these newly acquired skills into their future creations, pushing the boundaries of their artistry even further!

Sunday Session: Pine Needle Sampler with Leiko Uchiyama – the 12th of January, 2025

Our first Sunday Session of the year will be exciting and only open to Feltmakers Ireland members. It is a hands-on sampler workshop where 27 members can make a sample using Leiko Uchiyama’s ‘Pine Needle Technique’.

Only 27 members can participate in this Sunday’s hands-on session. If we receive more than 27 requests, participants will be selected through a random draw from a ‘virtual hat.’ Additionally, 10 to 15 more members are welcome to attend as observers. These will also be selected randomly.

Important: To participate, attendees must renew their Feltmakers Ireland Membership for 2025. To renew, visit our Membership Page, where debit and credit card payments are now accepted. After renewing, email us directly to be entered into the ‘virtual hat.’

Class description from Leiko:

We will make a small sample of the ‘Pine Needle Technique’, one of my iconic works. This is a wet felting technique used to create lacy felt.

I will bring my hand-dyed mix of 50% 17.5 micron Merino and 50% silk, which I usually use for this technique. It is €7/25g, and two to three people can share one bundle. This could be a good opportunity to try this material. Normal merino can also be used.

I will also bring some of my other types of wool (21, 18 and 16 micron Merino and Corriedale) for sale.

What to bring:

  • Fine Merino wool top (10g), or you can purchase Leiko’s 50/50 silk mixed wool.
  • Small sharp scissors
  • Small bowl for cereal, soup… or Tupperware, etc, to dip the wool.
  • Bubble wrap 35-40cm square (1)
  • Liquid or grated soap
  • Rolling pin (about 3cm diameter x about 30cm long) (1)
  • Small towel or cloth for rolling (2)
  • A small towel to dry your hands
  • A plastic bag

Sunday Session: This Sunday – Preparing for Exhibitions

Upcoming Sunday Session

Our December Sunday session on the 8th, Feltmakers Ireland, will help to get members’ creative juices flowing for our 2025 exhibition. The theme is ‘Symbols of Ireland’, and the show opens in March, which is relatively soon. To learn more about our upcoming exhibition theme, please visit this page on our website – https://feltmakersireland.com/exhibition-application-symbols-of-ireland-2025/

We encourage you to bring any previous artwork you have questions about framing or presenting. This will provide us with examples while we discuss possible ways to frame or display pieces for an exhibition.

  • Committee member Dee Crofts will supportively lead a Mind Mapping exercise around the exhibition’s theme to spark our creativity.
  • Guild member Ramona Farrelly, a talented photographer, will share how to photograph work for online submissions.
  • Guild Member Marie Dunne, who is also a member of Element15 and has artwork in their inspiring group exhibition, Roots: A Dialogue in Textile and Poetry, at the Coach House Gallery, Dublin Castle, will discuss the preparation and framing of artwork.

News: Feltmakers Ireland’s Open Day – National Heritage Week Awards – County Winner, Dublin City

On the 15th of November, Feltmakers Ireland was awarded the County Winner in the National Heritage Week Awards for the Dublin City Council local authority area.

Every year, the Heritage Council celebrates the work of communities and organisations that hosted National Heritage Week events, which kick off on the third weekend of August and run until the end of the following weekend. Feltmakers Ireland hosted two Open Days, where we shared the magic of wet felting with the public. One event was in Kilbeggan, County Westmeath, and the other was in Inchicore, County Dublin, at the CIE Sports Hall and Social Club, where we typically hold our monthly Sunday Sessions. In addition to sharing how wool fibres transform into felt, we displayed felted wearables and artwork created by members. A second display area had information on Irish wool, how it can be used for feltmaking, and copies of our book, ‘Exploring Irish Wool for Feltmaking’.

Thank you to the Heritage Council for recognising feltmaking as a cultural heritage. Additionally, we want to thank the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCI) for supporting our guild throughout the years.

We don’t know who kindly nominated our event for the County Dublin Award, but we are ever so appreciative! Go raibh míle maith agaibh, (which is ‘Thank you very much’ in Irish).

Sunday Session: This Sunday – Wet Felted Holiday Star with Annika Berglund

On the 17th of November, our Sunday Session will be a mini-workshop with artist and guild member Annika Berglund.

We will make a wet-felted Holiday Star for window decoration – perfect for Christmas or year-round!

There will be a choice of three finished models using wool yarn, Merino wool, and, for one version, Wensleydale locks.

What to bring:

  • One large and one small towel
  • Sewing pins
  • Small sharp scissors
  • Bubble wrap – approximately sized at 25 by 50cm
  • Soap and water bowl
  • Ball brause or sprinkler
  • A plastic bag

All other materials will be provided.

Additional Information

A Sunday Session like this will require lots of tea/ coffee/cake and chat, so there’ll be an abundance of that. Of course, homebakes are always welcome! Please bring a ‘keep cup’ or mug from home if possible. That will lessen the amount of paper cups thrown away.

There is the usual 5 euro fee.

Note: Since this is the season of colds and coughs, let’s not share them. However, we welcome you to join via Zoom Link, which we email to all members on Friday afternoon.

Annika Berglund Exhibition

Annika Berglund, a graduate of NCAD, has shown work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and abroad and has won several awards, including the Crafts Council’s price for Best Craft in the Garden 2008 and the NUI Art and Design Prize 2010.

Moving from ceramics, glass, and bronze to felt in 2020, one of her earliest felt pieces depicting the COVID-19 virus was acquired by the National Museum of Ireland. Having had one solo show and many group shows featuring Felt, Annika was a primary contributor to Feltmakers Ireland’s research project around Irish wool and the resulting book, Exploring Irish Wool for Feltmaking. She is currently Treasurer of Feltmakers Ireland.

Annika’s upcoming solo exhibition, Tapestry, opens on Sunday, the 17th of November at 15:00 in the Olivier Cornet Gallery (after the Sunday session). She welcomes you all to attend. The show runs until the 15th of December.

News: Feltmakers Ireland – Instagram Over 500 Followers

Our Instagram account

Perhaps not the biggest news of the day, but Feltmakers Ireland’s Instagram account, which we ‘renamed’ in January, now has over 500 Followers. This is exciting news!

Our former Instagram was @feltmakersireland, and we had over 1,000 followers. However, due to circumstances beyond our control, we did not have proper access to the backend, so we could not share Members News on our Stories or access any direct messages (DMs) sent to the account.

Consequently, we set up a new account on the 24th of January, 2024. Our ‘new’ account is @feltmakers_ireland ! Please add us to the artists and organisations that you follow. We aim to post daily, from Monday through Friday. {Editor’s Note: Our Facebook account was and still is FeltmakersIreland – https://www.facebook.com/feltmakersireland/

Feltmakers Ireland is a voluntary craft guild with members throughout Ireland and a few in Northern Ireland and beyond!

We try to cater to ALL types of felt-making: wet felters, needle felters, professional feltmakers, hobbyists, and ANYONE with interest in wool, fleece, or felt.

We have our Sunday Sessions on the second Sunday of the month at the CIE Sports Hall in Inchicore. On the 17th of November, our Sunday Session will be a mini-workshop with artist and guild member Annika Berglund.

We will make a wet-felted Holiday Star for window decoration – perfect for Christmas or year-round!

There will be a choice of three finished models using wool yarn, Merino wool, and, for one version, Wensleydale locks.

What to bring:

  • One large and one small towel.
  • Sewing pins
  • Small sharp scissors
  • Bubble wrap – approximately sized at 25 by 50cm
  • Soap and water bowl
  • Ball brause or sprinkler
  • A plastic bag

Annika Berglund, a graduate of NCAD, has shown work in solo and group exhibitions nationally and abroad and has won several awards, including the Crafts Council’s price for Best Craft in the Garden 2008 and the NUI Art and Design Prize 2010.

Moving from ceramics, glass, and bronze to felt in 2020, one of her earliest felt pieces depicting the COVID-19 virus was acquired by the National Museum of Ireland. Having had one solo show and many group shows featuring Felt, Annika was a primary contributor to Feltmakers Ireland’s research project around Irish wool and the resulting book, Exploring Irish Wool for Feltmaking. She is currently Treasurer of Feltmakers Ireland.

Annika’s upcoming solo exhibition, Tapestry, opens on the 17th of November at 15:00 in the Olivier Cornet Gallery (after the Sunday session). She would like to welcome you all to attend if you have the opportunity.
