Exhibition: Fibre Art Exhibition at the Renwick Gallery – Washington, DC USA

The artists featured in ‘Subversive, Skilled, Sublime: Fiber Art by Women’ transformed everyday materials like cotton, felt, and wool into deeply expressive, personal creations. This exhibition offers an alternative perspective on twentieth-century American art, spotlighting the work of artists including Adela Akers, Neda Al-Hilali, Emma Amos, Lia Cook, Olga de Amaral, Consuelo Jimenez Underwood, Sheila Hicks, Agueda Martínez, Faith Ringgold, Miriam Schapiro, Joyce Scott, Judith Scott, Kay Sekimachi, Lenore Tawney, Katherine Westphal, Claire Zeisler, and Marguerite Zorach. These artists express their visions through sewn quilts, woven tapestries and rugs, intricate beadwork and embroidery, twisted and bound sculptures, and mixed-media assemblages.

If one cannot travel to the show, an accompanying audio program on the website delves into ten powerful backstories, enriching the experience of the displayed artworks. In addition, there is an online gallery, which links to over thirty pieces, and a short accompanying bio for each artist.

Where: The Renwick Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington DC, USA.

When: The exhibition runs until the 5th of January, 2025.

Exhibition: The Women of Cuala & Dun Emer History and Embroidery with the Irish Guild of Embroiderers

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Yeats Sisters Commemoration Project and the Irish Guild of Embroiderers, with the support of DLR Heritage and Dublin City Library and Archive.

The show explains the origins of the Dum Emer & Cuala Industries in Dundrum and Churchtown, the engagement between the Yeatses, but specifically Susan ‘Lily’, and the pioneering figure of Evelyn Gleeson. Additionally, it includes contemporary embroidery from the Irish Guild of Embroiderers.

The exhibition elaborates through a series of visuals from original prints, the work of the many women artists who contributed to the Cuala portfolio, and presents original works by the members of the Irish Guild of Embroiderers, who, in marking the centenary publication of ‘The Cat and the Moon’ (Cuala, 1924) have found inspiration within the themes of this piece of WB Yeats’ writing, while also reflecting the colour palette and skilful selection of stitches created by Susan ‘Lily’ Yeats in completing her textiles.

Cat and The Moon, and Certain Poems

When: The show runs until the 30th of August, 2024.

Location: Exhibition: DLR Lexicon Library, Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin, A96 H283.

Exhibition: Festival of Cloaks – Derry

The Festival of Cloaks is an exhibition celebrating ceremonial cloak-making’s rich heritage and artistry. It showcases traditional skills, contemporary designs, and the fascinating stories behind these iconic garments. Around forty cloaks will be on display.

That project engaged schools and communities from the four corners of Ireland, reflecting a collective effort that mirrors St Brigid’s inclusive spirit.

The Festival of Cloaks installation honours historical traditions and enriches Derry’s cultural tapestry, inviting visitors to reflect on the themes of care, connection, and continuity.

Exhibition: Unravel – The Power and Politics of Textiles in Art – Barbican Gallery

Unravel, a significant group exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery features 50 international, intergenerational artists who use textiles to communicate vital ideas about power, resistance, and survival. From intimate hand-crafted pieces to monumental sculptural installations, these works offer narratives of violence, imperialism and exclusion alongside stories of resilience, love and hope.

The exhibition includes the work of several well-known artists, such as Faith Ringgold, Judy Chicago, Tracey Emin, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Louise Bourgeois, and Cecilia Vicuña, alongside less well-known creatives. (Interestingly, Vicuña frequently creates large installations with lengths of narrow wool roving.)

Where: Barbican Art Gallery, Barbican Centre, Silk Street, London, EC2Y 8DS

When: The show runs through Sunday, the 26th of May, 2024.

There is a glossary of textile techniques in the short exhibition guide.
