Of Interest: Archipelago of Colour Festival – Co Antrim

The Archipelago of Colour is a festival of natural colours which features workshops, talks, and activities for artists, crafters, and families. It will include deep ecology work, a colour safari, and workshops with experts on natural dyeing, ink making, eco printing, and using mineral pigments. Sunday is a family-focused day.

Event: Spinning Yarns Festival – Co Antrim

Spinning Yarns is a one-day festival on Saturday, the 7th of September. It celebrates wool and linen and will showcase the colour, creativity and craft associated with these homespun yarns, in all their forms.

The highlights will include:

  • Market Place with a wide range of traders, both local and from further afield
  • Craft and gift stalls
  • Displays, workshops, and demonstrations

Every aspect of the wool and linen journey will be represented, from the woolly animals, through the various stages of production, to beautiful finished products. As well as artisans and retailers of the highest quality exhibiting and selling products, visitors will be able try their hand at textile based skills.

Set in the stunning grounds of the Mossley Mill Complex, Spinning Yarns is a ‘must do’ event for those passionate about yarn or simply seeking a great day out.

Event: Blossom & Bloom Workshop Tomorrow- Feltmakers North – Lisburn

As part of August Craft Month,members of Feltmakers North are facilitating a short workshop, creating felted flowers.  The venue is Lisburn Library, Lisburn, County Antrim, and the event is free.

Experienced felt maker and Feltmakers North member Deborah Woolsey, will deliver the workshop, assisted by fellow Feltmakers North member Deirdre Gallagher. Enjoy learning about wet felting, a fun and hands-on textile craft combining wool fibres, water and friction to create unique and beautiful pieces. Participants will have the opportunity to make a wet felted flower to take home.

All materials provided. Please bring a hand towel and plastic bag for taking your piece home.

When: Friday, the 16th of August.

Feltmakers North are a group of feltmaking enthusiasts aiming to promote the art of felting, by sharing knowledge, skills, ideas and support in a relaxed and friendly setting. Everyone welcome.

This workshop is suitable for adults and is free of charge, but must be booked in advance by emailing feltmakersnorth@gmail.com.

Event: Fibre Networks – Growing Connections for Northern Ireland

There is a talk about flax and community networks at the Ulster Museum next Wednesday, 20th September, from 2:00 – 4:00pm, as part of the Linen Biennale NI.

At the heart of the global Fibershed movement is a commitment to creating a textile and clothing culture that enhances soil health and biodiversity through regenerative farming practices grounded in the concept of soil-to-soil systems and the right to livelihood for every person involved in the process from farming to finished garment.

In this short seminar, we will hear about the growth, successes and challenges faced by members of these collectives and consider how we can continue to grow more sustainable fibre networks in Northern Ireland.

Speakers include Fibreshed Ireland members @malu_colorin and eco-artivist @kathykirwan_eco_artivist, with a digital presentation from Shannon Welsh of @fibrevolution_pnw, who works with the @pnw_fibershed, USA.
