Lenore Tawney & Toshiko Takaezu: A Remarkable Friendship - photograph of installation in gallery.

We’re sorry for posting this one at the last minute, as it closes on Saturday, but this art exhibition looks inspiring. Online sources are filled with excellent pictures and information if you cannot instantly travel to London in Dr Who’s TARDIS.

The Alison Jacques Gallery presents ‘Lenore Tawney & Toshiko Takaezu: A Remarkable Friendship’, which is a two-person exhibition dedicated to the work and 50-year friendship of Lenore Tawney (1907-2007) and Toshiko Takaezu (1922-2011).

According to Tawney’s website, her “career as an artist did not begin in earnest until the age of fifty.”

For more information, see the gallery’s website – https://alisonjacques.com/exhibitions/lenore-tawney-toshiko-takaezua-remarkable-friendship

Lenore Tawney’s website – https://lenoretawney.org/

If you cannot make it to the show, textile artist Kim Winter has an excellent review post with many photographs of the installation in the gallery! https://kimwinter.co.uk/2025/01/09/lenore-tawney-toshiko-takaezu-a-remarkable-friendship

Kim is a former feltmaker, who now focuses on basketry. She has a long-running and informative blog that is worth following.

Of Interest: the Work of Christien Meindertsma

Via the stimulating Material Matters podcast, we learned about Christien Meindertsma‘s work with wool. She is a Dutch artist/designer who explores creative applications with two local materials: wool and flax. Amazingly, using ‘waste’ wool from sheep raised in the city of Rotterdam, she manages to print three-dimensional forms using cutting-edge technology.

Currently, she has an exhibition, ‘Re-forming Waste,’ at the V&A in London, which runs through Saturday, the 19th of October, 2024.

For more information about her show and to watch a video of some of her fascinating projects, visit this page on the V&A’s website – https://www.vam.ac.uk/blog/museum-life/christien-meindertsma-re-forming-waste

Meindertsma’s website catalogues her many thought-provoking explorations of wool. One of her research projects, Fibre Market, used a Fibersort machine to scan 1000 wool sweaters. The machine revealed differences between the information indicated on the material tags and the actual fibre content. Not unsurprisingly, the actual wool content was less.

Visit her website to see more of her intriguing work – https://christienmeindertsma.com/

Exhibition: Unravel – The Power and Politics of Textiles in Art – Barbican Gallery

Unravel, a significant group exhibition at the Barbican Art Gallery features 50 international, intergenerational artists who use textiles to communicate vital ideas about power, resistance, and survival. From intimate hand-crafted pieces to monumental sculptural installations, these works offer narratives of violence, imperialism and exclusion alongside stories of resilience, love and hope.

The exhibition includes the work of several well-known artists, such as Faith Ringgold, Judy Chicago, Tracey Emin, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Louise Bourgeois, and Cecilia Vicuña, alongside less well-known creatives. (Interestingly, Vicuña frequently creates large installations with lengths of narrow wool roving.)

Where: Barbican Art Gallery, Barbican Centre, Silk Street, London, EC2Y 8DS

When: The show runs through Sunday, the 26th of May, 2024.

There is a glossary of textile techniques in the short exhibition guide.

Exhibition: The Fabric of Democracy

Image credit: Peace in our Time Scarf 1938 on loan from the Paul and Karen Rennie Collection © Jonathan Richards.

The exhibition, ‘The Fabric of Democracy’, explores printed propaganda textiles of over two centuries, from the French Revolution to Brexit.

The mechanisation of textile industries from the mid-18th century led to the development of print techniques that could create more detailed imagery on cloth, quicker than before. These increasingly affordable processes ‘democratised’ textile decoration, allowing governments, regimes, and corporations to harness the power of print to communicate, from wartime slogans to revolutionary ideals.

On display will be textiles from countries including Britain, America, Italy, Germany and Austria, ranging from French toile de Jouy to Japanese robes from the Asia-Pacific war. In addition, there are Cultural Revolution-era Chinese fabrics which have rarely been exhibited in the UK.

The show is at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London, UK and runs until the 3rd of March, 2023.
