Textile Exhibition Call Out

Thread Song

The DCCoI are holding the 6th annual textile exhibition for members at this year’s Knitting & Stitching Show in the RDS. The theme is the life and work of WB Yeats .

The DCCoI invited members to attend a day long workshop on Monday 20th July. The morning session was presented by Medb Charleton an introduction to The Life and Poetry of W.B Yeats and Yeats Poetry and the Fabric of History. The later part of the morning was taken up with a couple of short technical talks. The first was about framing with some very valuable tip about framing your work for exhibition. This particular exhibition does not accept glass so that rules out any issues you might have with glass. We did look at the difference between regular glass and museum/archive glass which contains a UV filtre that will protect your work from light damage. The difference was amazing and the archive glass is certainly worth considering, despite the considerable price difference. The second technical session was about writing a successful application.  Assessors and curators will receive many applications and will have to read through them all so it is very important that yours is clearly written, concise and relevant.

The afternoon session was a collaborative workshop, facilitated by Caroline Schofield. Caroline gave us an inspirational whistle stop tour of her work. We then broke up into small groups and worked together to produce a visual interpretation inspired by the morning’s exploration of Yeats. This was great fun and fascinating to see how others responded visually to the words in a poem.

Details for applicants: Pieces must be contemporary in design and can be in any textile media utilising slow and/or fast craft techniques, handcrafted or digital technologies.
Work can take the form of literal or abstract interpretation, functional and non-functional, wearable and non-wearable.
Work will be selected on the basis of excellence in design and making, its fit within the overall exhibition and creative interpretation of the brief.
Work must have been made within the last three years and not previously shown in The Knitting & Stitching Show or in any DCCoI exhibitions.

Successful applicants will have their work photographed and exhibited in The Knitting & Stitching Show. This exhibition may also travel to other venues both in Ireland and the UK.

The deadline for submissions is 22 September 2015. It would be fantastic to see lots of felt represented in the exhibition
