A big thank you メルシー 万万 to Leiko Uchiyama

We had a fantastic day last Sunday working with Japanese felt artist Leiko Uchiyama. She is not only very talented but also very generous and shared her wealth of experience with us. She showed us the technique she uses for making some of her pieces, she calls it “pine needles” and is made by laying a fine mesh of wool fibre and gently felting them. We will try out the technique at our next Sunday Session on January 16th 2011 -without Leiko’s skillful guidance.

Pine Needles

Christmas Decorative Arts

Aimee - our newest feltmaker

We met some great people today in the National Museum of Ireland, Decorative Arts & History in Collins Barracks. Gabi, Holly & Sheila gave a workshop to a lovely group of parents and children. One group made red or green Christmas stocking and the other group made Fairies and tree decorations.  They are did extremely well – I think the smile on Aimee’s face says it all (above). A big thank you to Mary Greene and the staff in the Education Department for their warm welcome and continued support.

The Big Thaw

Fingers crossed that the thaw will allow us to hold the opening of our exhibition on Sunday next 12th December at 12.00 in the gallery of the Visitors Center in the Phoenix. Spiced hot apple juice, beautiful felt and a warm welcome awaits you.

A visit from Japanese felt artist Leiko Uchiyama

We are so lucky to have Japanese felt artist Leiko Uchiyama visiting Ireland in the next couple of weeks.  She has very kindly offered to spend Sunday 19th December with members of Feltmakers Ireland presenting her work and demonstrating her “pine needles technique” which she has been working on for the past couple of years- (which is lace effect with felt). People will also have the  opportunity to try it out for themselves. The event is taking place at the Merino College (Griffith Avenue, Dublin) from 10.30-15.30. It is open to members and places will be allocated on a first come basis. If you are interested in taking part please text Sheila on 0877738282 (don’t forget to include your name!). You will need to bring along some very fine merino wool fibre (10g) , a basic felt making kit (towel, water bottle, bubble wrap, etc) and a packed lunch.

It will be a great escape from the madness of Christmas shopping.

Snow Stops Play

Studio in the Snow
Studio in the Snow

Unfortunately we are cancelling our Sunday Session on the 12th December. The water pipes in the studio froze and burst so there is a problem with water everywhere. We hope to have everything back dry and warm for our January session.

Due to the weather conditions the opening of our exhibition “Reflections” which was due for Sunday the 5th December is postponed until the thaw comes. We have also had to postpone our workshop with Angela O’Kelly until after Christmas.

On a good note the weather is perfect for feltmaking.
